Flu Bee Game wins Best Emerging Solution For Patient Safety at 2020 Patient Safety Awards

Focus Games Ltd and Joan Pons Laplana are delighted to announce that Flu Bee Game has won the Best Emerging Solution for Patient Safety at this year’s HSJ Patient Safety Awards, recognising their outstanding contribution to healthcare. Following an intensive judging process, Focus Games was handed the prestigious accolade ahead of a highly competitive shortlist.

Over 1000 guests tuned in to the Patient Safety Awards this year, which took a virtual format on Tuesday, 10th November 2020, to celebrate the very best achievements and innovations driving the national patient safety agenda.

Focus games was recognised for their ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that their project has had on patient and staff experiences within the health and social care sector.

The combination of flu and COVID-19 could be catastrophic this winter. It is vital that all health and social care staff get the flu vaccination.

Despite the risks, some staff have concerns about the flu vaccine. These are often based on myths and misconceptions. Others need reminding to get vaccinated.

Flu Bee Game is an evidence-based educational app, developed with the NHS, that improves vaccine uptake by engaging staff on their phone. It takes minutes to play and does two vital jobs:
  1. Challenges common myths and misconceptions
  2. Tells staff where to get vaccinated in their organisation
Queen’s University Belfast discovered that 84% of student nurses with ‘vaccine hesitancy’ changed their minds after playing the game.

The HSJ judges said of Flu Bee Game:

“…a fantastic innovation, demonstrating clear staff safety improvements and value creation, and how a small idea can have big results. Overall, a creative proposition...”

Andy Yeoman, director and co-founder at Focus Games Ltd commented:

“We are absolutely delighted to have been named as the winners in the Best Emerging Solution for Patient Safety. It means a great deal to our staff to be recognised in this way. We plan a version of the game to support COVID-19 vaccines.”
